British troops are fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with weapons that are worse than what they used during the Second World War and after.
London, Aug.21 : British troops are fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan with weapons that are worse than what they used during the Second World War and after.
Former army chief, General Sir Michael Rose, has expressed this view while calling on the Gordon Brown Government to add about four billion pounds to the current defence budget.
A former Adjutant General and SAS commander, General (retired) Rose said he had recently met a Coldstream Guards commander, and was amazed to be told about the weapons that the guards were being given to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan.
Speaking at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, the Scotsman quoted him as saying, "They are going to Afghanistan with less good equipment than I had in 1964 when I commanded that platoon - and we were using World War II equipment. Our soldiers are hopelessly under-resourced - so are our airmen and sailors."
An outspoken opponent of the Iraq war, General (retired) Rose said: "We have taken on two major conflicts and are only capable of fighting one major conflict."
