Supermans Fortress of Solitude discovered 1000 feet below Mexicos Naica Mountain

Miners have discovered what could be described as Supermans fabled Fortress of Solitude a thousand feet below the Naica Mountain in Mexicos Chihuahuan desert.

Washington, Aug 2 : Miners have discovered what could be described as Superman's fabled 'Fortress of Solitude' a thousand feet below the Naica Mountain in Mexico's Chihuahuan desert.

In Superman films, the 'fortress' is depicted as a vast complex comprised of enormous crystal beams. Fans know it built itself from a single crystal in the far north.

However, the Cueva de los Cristales is a purely natural formation consisting of enormous beams of gypsum. Some of the crystals are as long as 36 feet, reports Livescience.

Incidentally, earlier in April this year, geologists from the mining group Rio Tinto had discovered Kryptonite, the only element that robbed Superman of all his powers, in Serbia.

However, unlike the fictional kryptonite in Superman comics and films, which is green, the substance, kept at London's Natural History Museum, is white and powdery, and emits no radiation.

According to Geologist Juan Manuel Garcia-Ruiz, who has described the probable origin of the crystals in the journal Geology, the crystals grew in mineral rich, 136 degree Fahrenheit water for millennia, until the cave was drained for mining operations.
