Manila (Philippines), Aug 2 : External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee held bi-lateral meeting with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi, on the sidelines of a South Asian Security meet in Manila.
The meeting was held on Wednesday to review the trade relations between the two countries and also to take stock of the rate of growth of trade within a stipulated period.
India and China also discussed the burning issue of global warming and decided to tackle the issue jointly to help put a break on the fast deteriorating climatic conditions.
Earlier in the day, Mukherjee also chaired a Mekong-Ganga Cooperation Ministerial meet to discuss cooperation between India, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Ministers of all these countries.
The Mekong-Ganga project is aimed to enhance cooperation in the fields of tourism, culture and education between the countries.
The project which envisages enhancing business contacts between the people residing on the banks of Mekong and Ganga rivers will help India to extend its footprints into the ASEAN region by exploiting the natural connectivity.
The linkage between India and these countries will also give India a chance to speed up economic development in its north-east region.
The project also seeks to develop transportation networks including East-West corridor project and the Trans-Asian Highway.
Once completed, the Trans-Asian Highway project will link up Singapore with New Delhi in South Asia via Kuala Lampur, Ho Chin Minh city, Phon Penh, Bangkok, Vientiane, Chiang Mai, Yangon, Mandalay, Kalemyo, Tamu, Dhaka and Kolkatta.
