Musharraf-Bhutto deal irks Pakistan ministers

The power sharing deal between President Pervez Musharraf and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto worked out in Abu Dhabi will harm the interests of the Pakistan Muslim League (Quami) in particular, and the government in general, warned three federal ministers.

Islamabad, Aug 2 : The power sharing deal between President Pervez Musharraf and former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto worked out in Abu Dhabi will harm the interests of the Pakistan Muslim League (Quami) in particular, and the government in general, warned three federal ministers.

Railways Minister Shaikh Rashid Ahmad, Industries Minister Jehangir Khan Tareen, and Water and Power Minster Liaquat Ali Jatoi have criticised the deal during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, the sources said.

The ministers sought an explanation from Aziz on the Abu Dhabi meeting, and suggested that President Musharraf should maintain a distance from Bhutto, the sources added.

Aziz said that Musharraf would meet Cabinet members to allay their misgivings about the rapprochement with the Pakistan People's Party (PPP), the Daily Times quoted sources, as saying.

Sources said the cabinet also reviewed the option of amending the constitution, provided Musharraf steps down as Army Chief before his re-election, to relax the condition of a two-year mandatory gap for a retired government servant to occupy a government office.

Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani told reporters that Aziz had taken the cabinet into confidence over the Musharraf's meeting with Bhutto.

"No immediate or overnight change is expected in the country as a result of what people are calling the Musharraf-Bhutto deal in Abu Dhabi," he said.
