The Foreign Office (FO) has rejected Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downers statement about Pakistan having a poor proliferation record.
Islamabad, Aug 18 : The Foreign Office (FO) has rejected Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer's statement about Pakistan having a poor proliferation record.
"The remarks are incorrect and uncalled-for. Those who forget that Pakistan was not the one to introduce nuclear weapons in South Asia, nor were we the first to test nuclear weapons, need to be reminded of the facts of history," Foreign Office spokeswoman, Tasnim Aslam, said.
Aslam said that the Pakistan government fully supported the global efforts aimed at non-proliferation.
"We have instituted strong command and control systems and export controls that conform to the most stringent international standards maintained to ensure non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction," she said.
Earlier, Downer said, "Pakistan has a very poor record of proliferation and it did have -- not now -- but it did have in the past."
The Australian Government had rejected calls from a Pakistani Minister to sell uranium to Islamabad, the Daily Times reported.
