US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Affairs Richard Boucher in his meeting with President Pervez Musharraf, has reiterated that Washington is concerned over restoration of democracy, and conduct of fair and free elections in Pakistan.
Rawalpindi, Aug 16 : US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Affairs Richard Boucher in his meeting with President Pervez Musharraf, has reiterated that Washington is concerned over restoration of democracy, and conduct of fair and free elections in Pakistan.
Boucher assured US continued support to Pakistan's move towards return of democracy, which was essential for peace and progress of the country, sources said.
Boucher asked the Musharraf regime to ensure transparency in the next polls, and hoped that the General would fulfil his promise to organise fair and free elections.
The two leaders also discussed cooperation in the war on terror and Musharraf reiterated that Pakistan was fighting the war on terror in its own interest, sources said.
Boucher and Musharraf agreed that the statements made by US presidential hopefuls advocating a strike in Pakistan's tribal areas should not affect the ties between the two countries, as they were prompted by domestic political compulsions, sources added.
"US policy is reflected in various statements by President Geroge W Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice emphasising the importance of the US-Pakistan partnership and the need for the two countries to work together," Boucher said.
Boucher, who arrived on Wednesday on his fourth visit to Pakistan this year, also appreciated the "contribution and sacrifices" made by Pakistan in fighting extremism and terrorism.
The Daily Times quoted him as saying that the US was committed to a long-term strategic relationship with Pakistan.
