Gun salutes were heard in the federal and the provincial capitals this morning.
The main Independence Day ceremony was held at the Jinnah Convention Centre in Islamabad where Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz hoisted Pakistan's national flag.
Addressing a flag-hoisting ceremony, Aziz said that no foreign power would be allowed to enter Pakistani territory.
"Pakistan was now being seen in the world with respect, as our ties with the countries all across the world were good," The News quoted Aziz, as saying.
On the Kashmir issue, Aziz said that it was Pakistan's principled stand that the issue should be resolved in accordance with Kashmiri aspirations.
He said that terrorism is a global challenge and vowed to bring into use all resources for its elimination.
He said that Pakistan would not tolerate an evil eye being cast on its nuclear assets.
"I assure you that Pakistan was on the move to progress and called for pledging working together so that Pakistan gets into the rank of developed countries," Aziz said.
At day break, special prayers were offered at mosques for the solidarity, progress and prosperity of the country. Ceremonies were also held in all provincial capitals.
A fresh Pakistan Naval contingent assumed guard duty at Mazar-e-Quaid in Karachi.
Sindh Governor Dr. Ishrat-ul-Ebad accompanied by members of the provincial cabinet visited Jinnah's memorial and laid floral wreaths in homage to Pakistan's Founder.
In Punjab, Chief Minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi hoisted national flag at the mausoleum of Allama Iqbal in Lahore.
Director General Rangers, Maj. Gen. Haroon Aslam, hoisted the national flag at the Wagah border.
School children actively participated in flag-hoisting ceremonies. Besides, government, social and cultural groups organised various activities during the day. Various political parties also held public gatherings and rallies.All major government buildings have been decorated with colourful lights.
Earlier today, Britain congratulated Pakistan on its 60th Independence Day.
In his message, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "I congratulate this great country, and send my best wishes from the British people. I celebrate the strength of the UK-Pakistan relationship. Our history, values and hopes are, and will remain, permanently intertwined."
