Musharraf to address Pak-Afghan Jirga today

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf will today address the concluding session of the ongoing Joint Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga here.

Kabul, Aug 12 : Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf will today address the concluding session of the ongoing Joint Pak-Afghan Peace Jirga here.

Musharraf will also hold talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, before heading for the venue of the peace Jirga, which is being attended by around 600 delegates.

Pakistan and Afghanistan decided to jointly fight terrorism with a follow-up strategy of reconciliation with their "adversaries" - an indirect reference to the Taliban and Gulbuddin Hekmatyar.

The gathering of political figures, tribal elders, intellectuals on Saturday continued deliberations and the five sub-committees, tasked to prepare recommendations on key issues including terrorism and narcotics trafficking, finalised their work.

They will be presenting the recommendations to the Executive Committee for approval as the Kabul Declaration, The News reported.

According to Jirga officials, the 40-member committee will meet once a month to monitor the decisions reached at the Jirga.

The Jirga members vowed to jointly fight the menace of terrorism and extremism to bring peace, progress and harmony to the strife-torn country, said an Afghan official.

The members were of the view that non-violent elements that are not opposed to the Afghan Constitution should also be made a part of the Jirga, he added.
