Circumstances in the country demanded emergency: Pak Attorney General

Pakistans Attorney General Justice (retired) Malik Qayyum has said that the present circumstances in the country demanded imposition of an emergency.

Lahore, Aug 12 : Pakistan's Attorney General Justice (retired) Malik Qayyum has said that the present circumstances in the country demanded imposition of an emergency.

Qayyum said military personnel were being attacked and security checkposts were being hit with rockets in the country.

The Supreme Court's (SC) decision in favour of Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had depressed him, but Musharraf asked him to forget the past and move forward, Qayyum added.

The Daily Times quoted him as saying that he had told the government much earlier that it was impossible to win the case against the CJP because the judiciary had to secure itself.

Qayyum said that the release of PML-N acting president Javed Hashmi was a correct decision.

Commenting on a petition filed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif, Qayyum said that the government would welcome any decision by the court.

He added that he was surprised to see the agreement in which the Sharif family had agreed to live in exile.
