Former Pakistan Cabinet Minister Gohar Ayub Khan has disclosed that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was briefed about the Kargil operation before its launch.
Islamabad, August 1 : Former Pakistan Cabinet Minister Gohar Ayub Khan has disclosed that former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif was briefed about the Kargil operation before its launch.
Gohar, who is the son of Pakistan's first military ruler, Field Marshal Ayub Khan, said that a few senior army officers were in the know, and even the naval and air chiefs were not told about the launch of the operation.
President General Pervez Musharraf thought that he would not get this opportunity again in the near future, Gohar said in his book titled "Glimpses Into The Corridors of Power".
The Kargil conflict was taken up in a Cabinet meeting on June 3, 1999. Sharif opened the discussion with a letter he had received from US President Bill Clinton asking for the withdrawal of mujahideen forces from Kargil and Drass sectors, and from the posts they had occupied, the Dawn reported.
In his book, Gohar has written important military campaigns of the period.
