Sydney, Aug.1 : The Australian Cabinet is likely to clear the way for providing India with uranium, overturning a policy to sell it only to Non-Proliferation Treaty signatories.
Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer has said that uranium sales to India is "very much in Australia's interests".
Senior Australian ministers are likely to formalise the proposed deal in August, government sources said.
Australia has over 40 percent of the world's known reserves of uranium and is a major exporter of the fuel. ndia has been lobbying Australia to get access to it. Australia and China, an NPT signatory, are finalising safeguards arrangements for uranium sales. Australia exports uranium to 36 countries.
