Manohar Parrikar adopts village in Amethi

September 19, 2015 - New Delhi

  • Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar adopted Barauliya, a village in Amethi, under the Pradhan Mantri Adarsh Sansad Gran Yojana.
  • Manohar Parrikar was elected to teh Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh. He did not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections as he was the Chief Minister of Goa at that time.
  • Though Uttar Pradesh has 80 constituencies, the choice of Barauliya in Amethi, which was the home turn of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi seems to be a continuation of the political confronation between BJP leaders and RAhul Gandhi.
  • Parrikar's choice of Amethi seems to be at the request of Union Minister for HRD Smriti Irani, who unsuccesfully contested against Rahul Gandhi in Amethi.
  • Smriti Irani tweeted, "Thank you @manoharparrikar for accepting our request to undertake Barauliya's development under PM Adarsh Sansad Gram".
  • Though Irani lost the Lok Sabha election at Amethi, she continues to maintain links there. Manohar Parrikar even campaigned for Smriti Irani at the time of 2014 election.
