Supreme Court commuted death sentence of Veerappan aides to life sentence

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday commuted the death sentence of four aides of forest briand Veerappan to life term on the ground of delay in deciding their mercy plea by the Government. The court observed that delay in deciding a mercy plea is a relevant ground for commuting a death sentence to life imprisonment.
The Supreme Court ruled that the death convict and his family members be informed after his mercy please is rejected by the President or Governor and death convict must be hanged within 14 days after dismissal of the mercy petition.
