Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik meets Prime Minister - seeks special package

Odisha Chief Minster Naveen Patnaik met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday.

Naveen Patnaik wanted the Prime Minister special category status for Odisha. During the meeting, he demanded that the Polavaram project in Andhra Pradesh be scrapped and added that the project would cause displacement of people and submergence of land in Malkangiri district.

The Prime Minister is quite positive over his demands, he said after the meeting and hoped that the NDA government would treat Odisha better than the previous UPA government, he said. Meanwhile, Prime Minister's Office described the meeting as a courtesy call.

Seeks full compensation

Naveen Patnaik who met the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and sought full compensation for the revenue loss the State would suffer due to the phasing out of the Central Sales Tax. He said that Odisha government received a mere Rs.256 crore as compensation in 2010-11 as against the loss of Rs. 664 crore and no compensation was received since then, he said. He also wanted royalty rates on major mineral to be revised to 15 per cent from the existing ten per cent.
