June 3, 2014 - New Delhi

The appointment came in the back drop of the AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi does not appear to shoulder the responsibility of leading the party on the forefront at a time when it is down and out.

Confused message

The appointment of Kharge as LoP in Lok Sabha gives a confused signal and it should have been taken either by Congress president Sonia Gandhi or it's vice president Rahul Gandhi. Kharge held the Labour and then the Railway portfolios in the UPA-II government have also edged out two senior MPs who were in the race former Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamalnath and former Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily. However, party sources maintain that the selection of Kharge as LoP will not only project that a Dalit face at a time when the Bahujan Samaj Party is losing ground but also rewarding Karnataka that gave nine out of 44 MPs.
