Election Commission introduces e-filing of affidavits
March 6, 2014 - New Delhi
For the first time in history of Indian polls, the Election Commission of India has introduced e-filing of affidavits by the contesting candidates.
However, the candidates have to furnish (Form 26) at the time of filing of their nomination for contesting a seat either for Parliament or Assembly. A typical affidavit filed by a candidate includes his personal information like details of assets (including movable and immovable properties), properties and accounts under his or her name in a foreign land, liabilities of the candidate, name of the spouse and dependants, educational qualifications and criminal antecedents, if any.
Sources said that the facility will be optional for the candidates this time and is introduced as a test case. The e-filing procedure is much like the I-T returns filing on the computer.
