'Compulsory voting should be introduced in India', says BJP senior leader Advani

April 20, 2014 - Ahmedabad

Addressing a gathering in Ahmedabad, BJP senior leader LK Advani on Sunday wanted the introduction of making voting compulsory and those failed should be barred from voting in future.

Advani said that that he had seen elections from 1952 and also studied election process of other countries. 'I had recommended that compulsory voting should be introduced in the country', he said. Not only compulsory but there should be some punishment for those who do not vote. In some countries, there is a fine, but in India there are many poor people. So I had suggested that those who do not vote should be barred from voting in future, said Advani.

Expressing hope that the new government will look into the issue of compulsory voting, said Advani. He said that as part of electoral reforms, candidates should be given election grants to curb expenses. Nowadays one cannot imagine the amount spent on polls and to curb this, grants should be given, said the BJP senior leader.
