Vijay Kumar promoted as Subedar Major by Indian Army

The Indian Army has promoted Olympic silver medalist Vijay Kumar as Subedar Major. Vijay Kumar has earlier served as a Subedar with the 16 Dogra Regiment.

Vijay Kumar has earlier revealed his frustration for being overlooked in promotions in the last six years. After winning the Olympic medal, Vijay Kumar said that he is disappointed that he was promoted only once in the last six years despite some major sporting achievements. On returning to the country, Vijay Kumar threatened to quit his job which prompted Sports Minister Ajay Maken to write to the Defence Minister AK Antony seeking consideration to Vijay Kumar.

Vijay Kumar has won three gold medals and one silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympics.
