Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh passes away

Minister of Science and Technology and Minister of Earth Sciences Vilasrao Deshmukh (67) who was suffering from liver cancer passed away at Global Hospitals on Tuesday afternoon in Chennai. Though Deshmukh had shown signs of improvement in the past few days, it turned out to be critical on Tuesday and died at 2pm. The family members including his three sons were by his side when he breathed his last.

Earlier Deshmukh underwent treatment at the Mumbai Breach Candy Hospital for a week and was air shifted to Chennai on August 6. He is being treated by the noted liver transplant surgeon Dr. Mohamed Rela and his team of doctors of several specialties.

AICC President Sonia Gandhi termed his demise as a great loss to the Congress party. The President of India, Pranab Mukherjee and the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed grief. The Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said termed it as a great shock.

Vilasrao Deshmukh held the posts of Minister for Rural Development and Minister of Panchayathi Raj and Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises. He was the former Chief Minister of Maharashtra.

Vilasrao's health did not permit for transplantation

He registered with the Tamil Nadu Organ Registry for a liver and a kidney and the case was cleared as a 'super ultra-emergency'. He was to receive the organs from a donor on Monday who was declared brain dead at the Government General Hospital. The prospective donor suffered a cardiac arrest in the wee hours of Tuesday morning before the organs could be taken out. However, two more set of organs were available by Tuesday morning but Vilasrao's condition did not permit the doctors.

Funeral at Babhalgaon

Family members said that the funeral will take place at his native village Babhalgaon in Latur district. The mortal remains of the departed leader and will be kept at his house in his village from 9am to 3pm for the people to pay their last respects and funeral procession will begin at 3pm.

Houses express grief

The members of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha expressed grief and shock over the death and expressed condolences. Both the houses were adjourned as a mark of respect.
