Trinamool Congress decides to support Pranab Mukherjee in Presidential Election

July 17, 2012 - Kolkata, West Bengal, India

Trinamool Congress chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced her support to UPA presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee in the presidential election. Her announcement today puts an end to weeks of speculation on whether the TMC will support the UPA candidate.

Addressing a media conference at the state secretariat in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said "We are taking the decision with a heavy heart. It is misfortune that we could not strike consensus around APJ Abdul Kalam. We are going to decide on the vice president later on. There are two options. One, we would not vote. Two, we vote for somebody. But then whom do we vote for? We always protest on questions that involves principles. We would continue with that position. That's a basic tenet,"

It is known that Trinamool Congress wanted to support Abdul Kalam for the president of India post, but Kalam refused to run for the election. The announcement of support to Pranab will come as a good news to the UPA who already has enough support to ensure their candidate's victory. Trinamool Congress is the second largest constituent in the UPA coalition who has 19 MPs in the Lok Sabha and 9 in the Rajya Sabha.

While announcing her support, Mamata referenced to the origins of Pranab Mukherjee as one of the key factors for their support. "Pranabda is from Bengal but we have taken the decision due to our commitment to the people", she said. Pranab Mukherjee has now the support of 7 lakh votes in an electoral college of nearly 11 lakhs. He already has the support of Bahujan Samaj Party, Samajwadi Party, CPI(M), Forward Block, Janata Dal (United) and Shiv Sena. Earlier in the day, DMK has also formally announced their support to Pranab Mukherjee.

The Presidential Election is due on July 19.
