Sushil Kumar Shinde nominated leader of house in Lok Sabha

August 3, 2012 - New Delhi

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has nominated the new home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde as the Leader of the House in Lok Sabha. The post has been vacant since the resignation of Pranab Mukherjee last month. Pranab has stepped down from the position to contest the presidential election which he won defeating PA Sangma.

After being nominated as the Leader of the House in Lok Sabha, Shinde said "I am grateful to the Prime Minister and Congress President Sonia Gandhi for nominating me as Leader of the House,"

Shinde was the Power Minister and had served as the chief minister of Maharashtra earlier. He was a member of state assembly in Maharashtra for seven terms. Shinde also served as the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. He was the given charge of the home ministry in a cabinet reshuffle on July 31.

Normally, the Prime Minister will be the leader of the house in Lok Sabha if he is a member of Lok Sabha. Since Manmohan Singh is a member of Rajya Sabha, he can nominate the leader of the house in Lok Sabha.
