SC rejects Nupur Talwar's review petition

June 7, 2012 - New Delhi

In a major setback to Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, the dentist couple accused of murdering their daughter Aarushi Talwar and domestic help Hemraj in 2008, the Supreme Court (SC) rejected their review petition on Thursday.

Nupur Talwar had filed a petition in the apex court asking it to quash the case against her and husband Rajesh Talwar in the trial court, which has framed murder charges against them.

The bench of Justice AK Patnaik and Justice JS Khehar on May 16 had reserved the order after hearing the contentions of Nupur Talwar and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which had strongly opposed her plea.

The trial against the Talwars was scheduled to commence on Monday at the special CBI court in Ghaziabad, but the court deferred the hearing till Friday as the local bar association struck work after a lawyer's death.

The couple was, earlier charged with murder and destruction of evidence by the court on May 24.

The court's decision had come after the Talwars' counsel produced a golf club to dispute allegations that the couple used a similar club to kill Aarushi and Hemraj in the sensational twin murder.

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had rejected Dr. Nupur Talwar's bail plea, and charged her with murder and destruction of evidence.

Nupur Talwar was arrested on April 30 and has been lodged in Ghaziabad's Dasna jail.

Aarushi, 14, was found dead with her throat slit at her Noida residence on May 16, 2008 and the body of Hemraj was recovered from the terrace a day later.
