Rajasthan Police serves notice on actor Shahrukh Khan for smoking in public

May 22, 2012 - Mumbai

Rajasthan Police on Tuesday served a notice on Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, asking him to appear before a Jaipur court on a complaint that he was seen smoking in public.

Khan was caught on camera smoking during an Indian Premier League (IPL) match at Jaipur's Sawai Man Singh stadium in April this year.

The incident took place during a match between the Kolkata Knight Riders and the Rajasthan Royals on April 8.

A complaint was filed before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's court on April 9 by Jaipur resident Anand Singh Rathore, who alleged that despite a ban on smoking in public, the actor puffed away in front of thousands of cricket fans.

He said the actor is idolised by his fans, and when he lights up in public, it sends the wrong signal to the latter.

The court took note of the complaint and asked Khan to be present for the hearing on May 26.

Smoking in public places is banned all over the country.
