Raja and Kalmadi made members of Parliamentary panels

Tainted MPs former Union Minister A Raja and Suresh Kalmadi, who have spent some time in jail in connection to various scams, have been made members of two separate Parliamentary Committees. A Raja is the main accused in the 2G spectrum scam, while Suresh Kalmadi is being accused in the 2010 Commonwealth Games scam. Changes have been made today in Parliament standing committees.

A Raja is a member of parliament representing DMK party in the Lok Sabha. He has been nominated to the Standing Committee on Energy. Raja was arrested in connection with the scam on 2 February 2011 and is on bail since 15 May 2012. He has been tried for criminal conspiracy, cheating and breach of trust by a public servant.

Meanwhile, Congress MP Suresh Kalmadi has been nominated to the Standing Committee on External Affairs. Kalmadi was also arrested and spent nine months in jail and was suspended by the Congress party. He has been released on January 19, 2012. According to sources, Congress did not nominate him, but didn't object when he asked to be part of the Committee on External Affairs.

Both Raja and Kalmadi have been attending the Parliament sessions regularly since their release.

Another DMK MP Kanimozhi, who is also the daughter of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was also nominated to the Standing Committee on Home Affairs. She is also accused in cases related to 2G spectrum and has spent some time in jail.

AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi has been made member of the Standing Committee on Finance headed by BJP leader Yashwant Sinha. Rahul Gandhi, served as member of Standing Committee on HRD and Home Affairs earlier.

BSP leader Dara Singh Chauhan has been shifted to the Committee on Labour. Congress leader Hemananda Biswal will be the new Chairman of the Committee on Social Justice and Empowerment.

The role of members of Parliamentary Standing Committees is to examine the bills and give suggestions to the proposed legislations related to ministries concerned.
