Raghuram Rajan appointed Chief Economic Advisor in Finance Ministry

Chicago University professor and former IMF chief economist Raghuram G Rajan has been appointed the chief economic advisor (CEA) in the finance ministry. His appointment was cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. Rajan was also the honorary economic advisor to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Rajan is an alumni of IIM-Ahmedabad and IIT-Delhi. He received a doctorate from Massachussets Institute of Technology. He is currently serving a professor at University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.

A selected panel headed by PM's Economic Advisory Council Chairman C Rangarajan had recommended Rajan for the position shortlisting him from 18 applications. Rajan is known for liberal views.

The position of CEA has been lying vacant since Kaushik Basu's term ended on July 31.
