Protests against Delhi gangrape continue on Sunday

December 23, 2012 - New Delhi

The demonstrations which started on Saturday protesting the Delhi gang rape has continued today. The police continued their crackdown on protesters and are trying to evacuate protesters from Raisina Hill and Vijay Chowk. As many as 7 metro stations have been shut in New Delhi.

The protesters spent the night continuing their protest in front of the residence of Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The police evacuated them and have taken away early Sunday. The police have invoked Section 144 of CrPC early Sunday prohibiting the assembly of more than four persons in the area.

To pacify the protesters, Sonia Gandhi came out of her residence and spoke to the protesters. She assured them that justice would be done but has refused to give a time frame.

Protests at India Gate

Hours after police evacuated protesters from Raisina Hills and Sonia Gandhi's residence, more protesters assembled at the India Gate at 9 am. Despite repeated attempts of the police asking them to vacate the area as Section 144 of CrPC is invoked, the protesters refused to budge. The police had forcible removed them from the spot. Some of the protesters punctured the tyres in which the police kept them to take away from the area. A group of girls also laid down infront of the bus to stop the police action.
