Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announces 12th Five-Year plan

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has announced the 12th Five Year plan today. Announcing the new five-year plan, he said that the immediate priority is to achieve 8.2% growth that is inclusive and sustainable. He earlier chaired a meeting of the Planning Commission to discuss the 12th Five-Year plan. The government is targeting 8.2% growth which is lower than originally projected. The Key sectors that will be focused on are health and education.

He also emphasized the need for private investment to reach the goal. The Prime Minister called on backward classes, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes to participate in the development process.

The Prime Minister also lauded the achievement of his government during the 11th Five-Year Plan period. He said that the economy grew at 7.5% despite the global economic slowdown. The Agriculture industry grew by 3.3 percent.

Manmohan Singh also defended the reforms introduced in the last couple of days saying that they were growth-oriented.

Reacting to the Prime Minister's speech, CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta said, "The Prime Minister does not speak the last word. The government is miserably slow and non performing."

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, "It is basically a mismanaged economy. These are not reforms. The government is clueless about what it has to do".
