July 1, 2012 - Hyderabad

Taking his first jibe at rival P.A. Sangma, the UPA's presidential nominee Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said, that he did not believe in miracles.

Sangma had recently stated that he should not be brushed aside in the presidential race, and added that he could beat Mukherjee, -- touted as the favourite to be the 13th President of the country-as miracles do happen in the world.

Addressing mediapersons after meeting the legislators of Andhra Pradesh here, Mukherjee said, "I don't know. I don't believe in miracles. I don't know whether his miracle will happen or not."

Earlier on Thursday, the 77-year-old Mukherjee filed his nomination papers after resigning as the Finance Minister.

Mukherjee, once again, appealed to the Trinamool Congress (TMC) to support his candidature.

"I am appealing to all those who have not yet decided to take decision and take decision in my favour, in favour of the UPA candidate," he added.

The presidential election will take place on July 19 while the counting is scheduled to take place on July 22.

The incumbent President Pratibha Devisingh Patil's term ends on July 24.
