Pranab Mukherjee takes oath as President of India

President Pranab Mukherjee took oath of office as the 13th President of India. He arrived at his new home at Rashtrapati Bhavan around noon.

Pranab took oath exactly at 11:38 am in the Central Hall of Parliament. He took the oath saying, "I, Pranab Mukherjee, do swear in the name of God that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the Republic of India, and will to the best of my ability preserve, protect and defend the Constitution and the law, and that I will devote myself to the service and well-being of the people of India."

Pranab then switched seats with Pratibha Patil and was given a 21-gun salute. He signed a register before making a speech about problems of hunger, global terrorism, democracy and secularism and his role as protector of constitution.

Predecessor Pratibha Patil was given a ceremonial send off. Her new address will be a temporary one at 2, Tughlak Proad in New Delhi before she moves to Pune. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and all the ministers of the cabinet have given a farewell.
