Pranab Mukherjee congratulated personally by Manmohan Singh and Sonia Gandhi

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has congratulated President-elect Pranab Mukherjee for winning the presidential election. The Prime Minister along with his wife Gursharan Kaur drove to Mukherjee's residence at 13 Talkatora Road to congratulate the new President.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son and Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi also congratulated Pranab Mukherjee personally. Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar also drove to Pranab's residence to congratulate him. Pranab Mukherjee was declared winner in what was virtually a one-sided election. He secured 713,763 votes against Sangma's 315,987 votes.

Speaking to reporters after his victory, Pranab Mukherjee said: "I have deep gratitude and appreciation for the people of this great country for conferring this distinction of electing me to the high office. It would now be my responsibility to defend and protect the Constitution as President ... I would try to justify in modest way to be trustworthy of my people,"
