August 21, 2012 - New Delhi

The Ruling and Opposition parties have come together and unanimously elected Congress leader PJ Kurien as Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has proposed Kurien for the post and was seconded by Leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley. Chairman Hamid Ansari announced the election of Kurien. Manmohan Singh and Jaitley later escorted Kurien to his seat.

Speaking in the house, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said that Kurien has vast experience in the proceedings of the house. “We wish him all success and promise him that we will cooperate with him to the maximum so that the House can run smoothly”, said Manmohan Singh. Referring to Kurien’s seat next to Jaitley, the leader of the opposition jokingly said, “Now that he has literally crossed the floor and has come to this side, I'm sure he will be fair to this side.”

The Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha takes care of the day-to-day matters of the house in the absence of the Chairman.
