Nothing wrong in Raja, Kalmadi being made Standing Committee members: Congress
October 3, 2012 - New Delhi
The Congress party on Wednesday saw nothing wrong in the nomination of 'tainted' MPs A Raja and Suresh Kalmadi as members of Parliamentary Standing Committees. A Raja, who is the prime accused in the 2G spectrum scam has been made member of Standing Committee on Energy. Suresh Kalmadi, who is facing charges of corruption in the Commonwealth Games scam has been made member of Standing Committee on External Affairs.
Congress party spokesman PC Chacko, who also heads the Privileges Committee of the Lok Sabha, said "It is the right of a member of Parliament to be on a committee, whatever may be the charges or allegations. The members are not nominated by their party." He said that being part of a Parliamentary Standing Committee is a privilege and every MP is entitled to be on such committees.
DMK MP Kanimozhi, who was also arrested in cases related to the 2G spectrum scam was also made a Parliamentary Standing Committee member. All the three - A Raja, Suresh Kalmadi and Kanimozhi were released on bail.
The Members of Parliament express their choices for certain Parliamentary Committees and they are granted memberships.
