NCP still in UPA Coalition says Praful Patel

July 20, 2012 - New Delhi

Within 24 hours of a potential crisis within the UPA coalition, Congress is able to minimize the damage by able to convince the NPA leaders. Though unhappy over the functioning of the government, NCP leaders Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel are still in the UPA government. They dismissed the speculation that they have tendered the resignation to the cabinet.

Praful Patel said, "The UPA government is entering its last phase before the next general elections and NCP along with UPA should gear up for 2014. For that government should be more decisive, more committed to the issues which are before the people of the country. …Certainly with the presence of Pawar, a leader of tall stature, the UPA under the able leadership of PM will be able to solve the issues. NCP has been a very responsible allay for the last 8 years and has been pillars of strength both inside and outside in functioning of UPA government,"

Sharad Pawar met UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in the morning and raised some issues including expressing the displeasure of the functioning of the government. Pawar also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh yesterday. Sources say that NCP was unhappy for overlooking Sharad Pawar over the No. 2 slot. Praful Patel rejected the claims saying, "The issue has been blown out of proportion. He was given a position next to Pranab Mukherjee in Cabinet meetings on virtue of his stature; in Parliament he sits next to Sonia…Pawar is not a petty leader to raise such an issue himself."
