Manmohan Singh makes a reshuffle to his cabinet

July 31, 2012 - New Delhi

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has made a minor reshuffle to his cabinet on Tuesday. After the resignation of Pranab Mukherjee, Manmohan Singh temporarily held on to the Finance portfolio. In the reshuffle Tuesday, Manmohan Singh made P Chidambaram the new Finance Minister. Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde is given Chidambaram's portfolio and is made the new Home Minister. Corporate Affairs Minister M Veerappa Moily was given additional charge of Power Ministry.

Chidambaram served as the Finance Minister earlier between May 2004 and November 2008. It is not an easy time for Chidambaram as the economy is on a slowdown currently and the inflation is at its high levels. The appointment of Chidambaram as the finance minister is likely to be welcomed by the markets. The reshuffle was necessitated by Pranab's resignation June 26, who went on to become the President of India.

Veerappa Moily takes over as power minister at a time when 19 states in the country and over 600 million people are facing power crisis.

Shinde is also expected to be made Leader of the Lok Sabha.
