Lalu demands CBI probe into Ranvir Sena chief's killing

June 5, 2012 - Patna

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad on Tuesday called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the killing of Ranvir Sena chief Brahmeshwar Singh alias 'Mukhiya'.

"I had said at the beginning that Brahmeshwar Singh Mukhiya's murder should be investigated by the CBI. The government is refusing to do so, and is giving weak arguments to avoid the issue. We do not condone any kind of violence; we are the soldiers of democracy," said Yadav.

"Why is (the government) not ordering a CBI enquiry? Why are they evading the issue?" he asked.

Bihar Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, however, refuted the demand for a CBI probe, and said that the state police would handle the case better.

"There is nothing extraordinary about a CBI enquiry. The Bihar police is more capable than the CBI in investigating any kind of case, especially criminal cases like this one. The people are aware of how the CBI has handled the cases entrusted to it in the past," Modi said.

Brahmeshwar Singh, founder of the militia of big landholders and middle peasants in South Bihar plains Ranvir Sena, was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Bihar's Bhojpur District on Friday morning. Singh was on a morning walk near his house when unidentified assailants shot him.

Mukhiya, who was earlier facing life imprisonment in various carnage cases, was acquitted and released from jail in April this year.

Ranvir Sena is a right-wing upper-caste landlord militia mainly based in Bihar, India. This group is thought to be formed by Bhumihar Brahmin landlords. It carries out actions against Dalits and other members of the scheduled caste community as well as the Naxalites. The Ranvir Sena has been connected to many murders, rapes and thefts. It has, on several occasions, been accused of human rights abuses. It is regarded as a terrorist group.

The Ranvir Sena has committed violent acts against Naxalite sympathisers and other members of the militant communist party. The Bihar Government banned the Ranvir Sena in July 1995 and since then the Ranvir Sena remains proscribed.
