Kapil Sibal releases letters from BJP Chief Ministers urging the PM not to modify allocation policy

September 6, 2012 - New Delhi

The Congress has launched a counter-offensive against the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party in the coal blocks allocation issue. Union Minister of HRD and IT Kapil Sibal made public a few letters written by the BJP and other non-Congress chief ministers written to the centre opposing any changeover to auction of coal blocks.

Kapil Sibal said that the letters clearly show that the states have a say in the allocation policy and that it is wrong to put the blame on the Centre. The letters that were shown to the media include the communication sent by Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje (BJP), Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan (BJP), Chief Secretaries of Chhattisgarh where BJP was in power and the CPI-M ruled West Bengal.

Meanwhile, the BJP has alleged that Prime Minister gave his stamp of approval for each coal block allotment. They criticized that the Congress is trying to defend the indefensible. BJP spokesperson Prakash Javedkar said, "Congress is neck-deep involved in Coalgate... They are defending the indefensible. They first deny the existence of any scam. Then they try to destroy the credibility of the Constitutional agency which brings out their corruption and after failing in this they resort to diversionary tactics,"
