Jaswant Singh likely to be NDA's choice for Vice President

July 15, 2012 - New Delhi

The NDA has almost finalized the name of Jaswant Singh as their vice presidential candidate. A day before the NDA meets to finalize their vice presidential candidate, sources say that the prospects of Jaswant Singh to challenge UPA candidate Hamid Ansari is very high.

BJP is awaiting Trinamool Congress to announce their decision on vice presidential candidate. In a UPA coalition meeting, Railway Minister Mukul Roy who attended as Trinamool Congress' representative has opposed to the candidature of Ansari. They suggested the names of former West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi and former Lok Sabha MP Krishna Bose. However, in a new twist, Gopal Gandhi has refused to contest the election earlier today.

Before the UPA meeting, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has phoned BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and LK Advani and urged them to support Ansari for a second term. Sources say that the BJP is not inclined to support Ansari because of how Ansari dealt with the Lokpal bill issue in Rajya Sabha last December.

Jaswant Singh served in the Indian Army in the 1960s. He served as Finance Minister, Minister for External Affairs, Minister of Defence earlier.
