JD (U) backs Jaswant Singh as Vice-President candidate

July 16, 2012 - New Delhi

Janata Dal (United) Chief Sharad Yadav said that his party will back Jaswant Singh for the Vice-President position. The announcement came soon after NDA announced that it will field former Union Minister Jaswant Singh against NDA's Hamid Ansari who is running for a second term.

The Vice-President poll will take place on August 7, 2012.

Sharad Yadav said, "Whatever BJP leader LK Advani has said (on vice presidential election) is right. It's a unanimous decision to field Jaswant Singh as NDA's vice presidential nominee."

JD(U) is however backing Pranab Mukherjee for President. Sharad Yadav said, "NDA was united earlier also. An exception had happened for Presidential election. We backed Pranab Mukherjee's candidature because he understands the country. That does not mean we are with Congress."

Yadav said, "The issue of vice-president election and Pranab Mukherjee are separate. I have never supported Congress' political line since I joined politics. We have supported Mukherjee for his political experience only".

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, "Singh's selection as a candidate for the post of vice-president was unanimous".

The names of Sharad Yadav and Najma Heptullah came up earlier but they are later dropped as the candidates themselves opted to be out of the VP race.

Sharad Yadav is the NDA convenor and hoped that NDA is united on the candidate of Jaswant Singh to be the vice-president. BJP felt hopeful that the vice-presidential poll won't divide NDA.
