Indian Vice-Presidential election today


August 7, 2012 - New Delhi

UPA Vice-Presidential nominee Hamid Ansari is most likely to retain the Vice-President post for another term in a direct contest with NDA's Jaswant Singh. The Vice-Presidential election was held today. 788 members of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha of the Indian parliament will elect the Vice-President.

While UPA and its allies are supporting Hamid Ansari, NDA and its allies including JD-U and Shiv Sena are backing Jaswant Singh. Congress has 204 members in Lok Sabha and 71 in Rajya Sabha. Trinamool Congress has 19 MPs in Lok Sabha and 9 in Rajya Sabha.

Congress = 204 + 71
Trinamool Congress = 19 + 9
DMK = 18 + 7
NCP = 9 + 7
RLD = 5
National Conference = 3 + 2
SP = 22 + 9
BSP = 21 + 15

Total = 459

For Jaswant Singh

BJP = 114 + 49
JD-U = 20 + 9
Shiv Sena = 11 + 4
SAD = 4 + 3
AIADMK = 14
Total = 228

Decided to abstain from voting

BJD = 18 + 7
