Government wins vote on FDI in Rajya Sabha

December 7, 2012 - New Delhi

The Government managed to win the vote on Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail in Rajya Sabha. While the government received 123 votes for FDI, only 102 votes were polled for the motion against FDI in retail. 19 members of the house did not cast their vote. While the Bahujan Samaj Party favored the government in the vote, the MPs of the Samajwadi party staged a walk out of the Rajya Sabha too. The win in Rajya Sabha came a couple of days after the government managed a victory in the Lok Sabha by 253-218.

After the victory in the Rajya Sabha, the government declared that the reforms were on track. Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath dismissed the BJP's charges that the UPA has used CBI to win the vote to get BSP's support. Party leader Rajiv Shukla said that the UPA being a majority in Rajya Sabha is a myth.

Upendra Kushawaha of the Janata Dal (United) had voted for the government even though his party was against FDI in retail. Speaking about the issue after the vote, JD(U) president Sharad Yadav said that the party would take action against Jushawaha for the cross-voting.
