Gadkari more of a businessman than politician: Digvijay Singh

May 31, 2012 - New Delhi

Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh on Thursday hit out at Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gadkari, and said the latter is more of a businessman than a politician.

Reacting to BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani's veiled attack on attack on Gadkari and called for "introspection" within the party over this current state in his blog, Singh said: "First of all it is an internal matter of the BJP. So, I neither agree nor disagree. But the fact remains that Mr. Nitin Gadkari who has never won an election all his life is calling the shots."

"He is more of a businessman than a politician. It is reflected in his dealings whether in Jharkhand Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament or matters of Mr. Yeddyurappa or in matters of Narendra Modi or if you just go and examine his assets what he was in 1990s before he became a PMD Minister of Maharashtra and what he has now," he added.

"I had said at the Core Group meeting that if people are today angry with the UPA government, they are also disappointed with us. The situation, I said, calls for introspection," Advani said in his blog.

"...when these days media-persons attack the UPA government for its string of scams, at the same time they regret that the BJP led NDA is not rising to the occasion. I, as a former pressman myself, feel they are reflecting public opinion correctly," he said.

Observing that the mood within the party "these days is not upbeat", he said, "The results in Uttar Pradesh (assembly polls), the manner in which the party welcomed BSP Ministers who were removed by Mayawati ji on charges of corruption, the party's handling of Jharkhand and Karnataka all these events have undermined the party's campaign against corruption."

Advani has, however, lauded Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley for their wonderful performances in Parliament.
