Fire at North Block doused, cause unknown(Update: Fire)

June 24, 2012 - New Delhi

A fire that broke out in the second floor of North Block in New Delhi was doused out on Sunday afternoon in less than an hour.

The North Block houses the home and finance ministries.

A fire was reported at 2.20 p.m. in Room No. 102, which is next to Home Minister P Chidambaram's office.

Seven fire tenders were used to put the fire out.

"The control room recorded the information at 2:20 p.m.," said Delhi Fire Services Director, AK Sharma.

Sharma, however, could not confirm the cause of the fire but said it was minor in nature.

"Cannot confirm the cause of the fire yet. Being a holiday, only security personnel were in the building. So, human intervention can be ruled out," Sharma said.

Playing down the incident, Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh said, "A window in a ventilator shaft caught fire, and not a room."

Singh said short circuit could be a possibility.

"Some garbage was lying nearby the ventilator shaft which caught the fire," he said.
