Fifteen International Baccalaureate (IB) Schools & Mumbai Dignitaries Conclude a Successful Model United Nations (MUN)

January 30, 2012 - Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The three-day long SISMUN 2012 hosted by Singapore International School (SIS) was unique because apart from the Model United Nations (MUN) experience it included a Photo Journalism contest for students and a Panel Discussion by leading Mumbai dignitaries. Chief Guest Mr. R. K. Padmanavan, Executive Director, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) inaugurated the event along with Mr. Sunjoy Monga, Conservationist, Photographer & Naturalist; and Mrs. Sharonee Mallick, Head of School, SIS.

The theme of the Photo Journalism contest was ‘Urban Saga’ that asked students to express themselves through pictures or frames on issues that touched their daily lives. The other key activity of SISMUN 2012 was the Panel discussion on ‘The Great Indian Divide: The widening gap between the glitz and the ghetto’ with renowned panelists like Dr. Abraham Mathai, Vice-Chairman, Maharashtra Minorities Commission; Ms. Vishakha Mulye, CEO & Chairman, ICICI Investment Banking; Ms. Marie-Lou Fernandes, Former IPS Officer, Author & Founding Partner at WorldXperts; Mr. Ken Ghosh, Independent Film maker; Ms. Rekha Nigam, Film script writer; Mr. Dharmesh Jain, Chairman & Managing Director, Nirmal Lifestyle; Captain Girish Kaushik, President, National Aviation Guild and Mr. Pranab Mukherjee, Editor, Kindle and Five Issues Project participating fully in the debate.

Mr. Omi Vaidya, leading cinema actor (3 Idiots fame) and Mr. Suresh Oberoi, leading cinema personality concluded the event with a prize distribution ceremony.

SISMUN 2012 focused on five committees namely African Union (AU), Interpol, United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) and UN Women. SIS had created a platform, providing training materials and online tools that allow participants to collaborate using new communication technologies and involve students in all aspects of the planning process. SISMUN conference has enabled students to take on the roles of foreign diplomats, debate international disputes, negotiate difficult global issues, draft and adopt resolutions. The issues debated ranged from illegal arms’ sales, piracy and terrorism to the abysmal conditions many women face in their domestic and working lives that are the real problems of today. The solutions that will arise may have the potential to shape the world of tomorrow.

Speaking about the event, Mr. Kaisar Dopaishi, Principal, SIS said, “Think of how much more we can do once students are fully empowered as active agents of change and progress within their societies. Historically, we are at a point of great potential and change for the young generation. Now we must seize that opportunity. Moreover, I expect that these MUNs will inspire the next generation of leaders to become involved in national and global issues. In my experience there is no limit to what the young generation is capable of achieving.”

The MUN experience is a simulation of United Nations forums, such as the General Assembly and its Main Committees and the Security Council. The conference introduces students to the rules of procedure that closely represent the United Nations’ functions. The MUN conferences intend to build on lessons learnt and accomplishments of Model UN programmes worldwide to increase support for the United Nations efforts to make the world a better place.

SISMUN represents SIS’s most ambitious effort to use this students’ collaboration platform in order to have a wider and better understanding of international relations, global issues and promote peace. It aims at creating a globally minded person and one who is also grounded in the reality of one’s culture and self-identity.
