Delhi Police denies permission to Team Anna to hold indefinite fast at Jantar Mantar

July 5, 2012 - New Delhi

Delhi Police have denied permission to Team Anna to hold indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar from July 25. Team Anna has earlier sought permission to hold an indefinite hunger strike protesting against the UPA government for their failure to tackle the issue of corruption and to enact a strong Lokpal Bill. The Government also denied Team Anna's demand to set up a Special Investigation Team to probe charges against Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and 14 of his Cabinet colleagues.

While denying the permission to hold hunger strike, the Delhi police cited that the proposed date coincide with the Monsoon Session of Parliament. In a letter to Team Anna, Delhi police said that a large number of organizations hold protests at Jantar Mantar throughout the year. Keeping in view of limited capacity to hold people and to provide equitable distribution of space to everyone, the Delhi police have denied permission to Team Anna.

The Police asked Team Anna to choose another venue if they want to sit on an indefinite fast. Jantar Mantar can handle only 5000 people at a time and large gatherings will run the risk of stampede at the venue.
