DMK leaders protest against power tariff announced by Jayalalithaa Govt.

April 9, 2012 - Chennai

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leaders staged a protest here on Monday against the power tariff hike announced by the Jayalalithaa Government last week in Tamil Nadu.

The DMK leaders took to streets here and raised slogans against the various policies of the state government such as hike in bus fares, milk prices, and power shortage. They also lashed at the government over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.

Addressing the crowd of protestors present at the rally, DMK legislator M. K. Stalin termed the recent rollback of power tariff as eyewash.

"At present Rs. 7,874 crores of electricity tariff has been increased throughout the state and out of this increase a negligible amount of Rs. 740 crores has been reduced. This reduction is just an eyewash and act of betrayal to the people of the state," said Stalin.

"And therefore to show our protest against this, we, DMK, have organized a state wide protest rally at each and every headquarters of the state," he added.

The AIADMK Government led by J. Jayalalithaa had recently hiked the power tariff rates by 37 percent.
