March 7, 2012 - Dehradun

Congress leader Harish Rawat on Wednesday said the party has decided to stake the claim to form the next government in Uttarakhand, as it has full majority.

"It was a very good discussion. We all decided to stake the claim to form the government. We have majority. The Uttarakhand Congress is grateful to the people," he said.

Rawat said Congress President Sonia Gandhi would select the candidate for the chief minister's post.

"There is no race (for the chief minister's post). Wherever decision Sonia Gandhi will take that will be acceptable to the party," he said.

Rawat also congratulated the people of Uttarakhand for expressing their confidence in the Congress Party.

"I want to thank the people of Uttarakhand for they expressed confidence in the Congress Party and gave us an opportunity to form the government. I want to congratulate all the Congress Party workers because our people won due to their hard work; they all deserve to be thanked," said Rawat.

"I congratulate the party workers of those seats, where we could not manage to win. I also congratulate the mediapersons," he added.

The verdict of Uttarakhand assembly polls has thrown up an indecisive mandate. Both Congress and the BJP are in the line to form the government in the state.ongress with 32 seats has a one-seat advantage over the BJP.

The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) with three MLAs holds the key to government formation in Uttarakhand.

Congress, which has emerged as the single largest party in the 70-member House, is at the moment leaving no stones unturned in trying to get the support of the BSP MLAs and independent winners to form the next government in the state.
