Centre to move Bill for promotions of SC/STs in Rajya Sabha today

September 5, 2012 - New Delhi

A day after the cabinet has cleared a proposal that provides provisions for reservations of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in job promotions, the Centre is planning to introduce a bill on the same in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Though, the bill is widely supported by almost all major political parties in the country except the Samajwadi Party, the bill is unlikely to see a smooth passage. The major opposition BJP has been stalling the proceedings of the Parliament over the coal gate scam and it is unlikely that they will allow the bill to be passed. If the bill does not get passed in Rajya Sabha today, the government is planning to bring it in Lok Sabha on Thursday.

BSP chief Mayawati has reached out to the BJP leaders Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitely and sought their cooperation for the passage of the bill. Meanwhile, the Mulayam Singh led Samajwadi Party who has been opposing the bill said that it is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court has already quashed the bill, they reminded.

The proposal for the bill has been cleared by the Cabinet on Tuesday.
