BJP pulls up Congress over new service tax regime

July 1, 2012 - New Delhi

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on Sunday slammed the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for imposing new service tax regime.

Addressing a news conference, Naqvi said the imposition of service tax would burden the common man who is already reeling under the price rise.

"The imposition of service tax is a bid to overburden the common man who is already reeling under the skyrocketing price rise of petrol, LPG and commodities. Imposition of service tax is nothing but to nag the common man," he said.

The Centre had decided to implement the negative list from July 1.

All other services, except those mentioned in the negative list, would become more expensive with the implementation of the new service tax regime.

The negative list already figures 38 services and all other activities would attract 12 percent tax.

Reportedly, services like betting, metered taxis, auto rickshaws, lottery, transport of goods or passengers, electricity transmission among others have been kept in the negative list.
