BJP leader hails pilots effort to save lives of Jharkhand CM, other passengers

May 10, 2012 - Ranchi

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Barkuanr Gagrai has hailed the pilots efforts in saving the lives of Jharkhand Chief Minister Arjun Munda and other passengers accompanying him while crash-landing a helicopter at Ranchi's Birsa Munda Airport on Wednesday.

Interacting with media at the Apollo Hospital, a visibly shocked yet stable Gagrai shared the horrific moments of the chopper crash.

"It was after we reached Ranchi that we were told that the chopper was facing difficulty in landing. We kept sitting in chopper, could not really do anything while the chief minister tried speaking to the pilot about the snag," he said.

"I felt that we might not survive, but it was due to the pilot's wisdom and blessings of god, that we survived the crash," said Gagrai.

Meanwhile, doctors attending to Munda have said that his vital organs were stable and that he was responding to their treatment well.

The condition of Munda's wife Meera and two pilots, J P S Kaushik and Vipul Kumar Singh, who suffered fractures, was also stable, the doctors said.

Munda, 44, suffered multiple injuries, including a fracture in his right-ankle and scratches on his left hand when the helicopter carrying him, his wife and four others crash-landed at the Birsa Munda Airport here on Wednesday.

According to media reports, after the aircraft developed difficulty in landing, the pilots tried taking control of the chopper and made extra circulations in the air in order to exhaust the fuel tank to avoid an explosion post the crash, which would have been fatal for the passengers.
