Assam on high alert as nation celebrates Eid

As the nation celebrates Eid ul-Fitr on Monday, the riot-hit Assam is kept on high alert. Heavy police forces were deployed in sensitive areas of Kokrajhar, Dhubri and Chirang to prevent any untoward situation. These areas witnessed ethnic violence in the last month clash between the Bodo tribals and Muslims. One hundred companies of security forces were deployed to prevent any sporadic violence in these areas.

Meanwhile, the police have urged the Muslims living in relief camps to offer their Eid prayers at their camps or to visit the nearest Idgah. The police said that they will be monitoring the speeches that will be made by Imams after the namaz.

Members of local peace committees comprising of Hindus and Muslims distributed sweets on the eve of Eid.

The security has also been stepped up in Bangalore which saw mass Northeast exodus recently. Nearly 17,000 policemen, 3 CRPF companies and 3 RAF platoons were deployed in Bangalore.

The UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi has appealed for the peace in Assam and Bangalore. She said that the guilty should be punished.
